Moving Reminder List

Moving house can be a daunting task as there are so many things to think about. So Challenge Settlement Services has put together a checklist to help you plan your move.

4 Weeks before the move

  • Make sure that you have signed all bank finance documentation.
  • Book a firm date for moving and arrange time off work if possible.
  • If renting, advise your current landlord or agent in writing, of your intention to move.
  • When considering your move, consider furniture removal:
  • Does your new house allow access for large appliances and pieces of furniture?
  • What level is the new house on? Is there a lift?
  • Decide if you need to book professional removalists or with the help of family and friends.
  • Packing up
  • Plan ahead. Get rid of as much junk as possible through charity bins or garage sales.
  • Start your packing early.
  • Complete an inventory of all items packed.
  • Mark all boxes packed - bedroom 1, kitchen etc
  • Check your insurance policy - will it cover the mover
  • Make a list of items you'll need on the removal day, so you don't pack something essential

2 Weeks leading up to the move

Organise your utility accounts:

  • Arrange for disconnection and reconnection of electricity, gas and phone - you can do this online or by phone (Synergy 131 353, Alinta 131 352)
  • Don't forget to cancel newspapers, cleaning, gardeners and other local services.

Advise Australia Post to redirect your mail as of the proposed settlement date.
